“With the support of the Markham Nathan Fund, The Shoestring will produce 2-3 in-depth works of environmental journalism for western Mass.

The challenges of a changing climate and other environmental issues demand an engaged public, and that public must be well-informed. As neighbors speak to each other and begin to organize around issues like groundwater contamination or our region’s role in green energy production and storage, we believe that in-depth reporting that follows the money and considers all perspectives, including that of the environment itself, lays a foundation for individuals and groups to make informed demands and principled decisions in an age of increasing climate chaos.

Stories about the environment and climate often demand a level of research, and sometimes expertise, that can far outstrip the average freelance story. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support freelance journalists in our community to make that investment of time that, too often, does not happen when it comes to environmental reporting in rural areas like western Mass.” Brian
